Business World: Price cuts for 99 medicines
PRICES FOR 99 branded medicines are expected to be cut substantially next month as part of moves to implement the Cheaper Medicines Act of 2008. Officials said the products fall under a state-compiled list of 21 "essential" drugs plus 22 "add-ons" volunteered by the pharmaceutical sector. Price caps will be mandated for five of the essential drugs after voluntary offers by the industry were found compliant only with respect to 16, the Health department said.
The 21 essential drugs are: anti-hypertensives amlodipine, telmisartan, irbesartan, clopidogrel, and atorvastatin; antidiabetic gliclazide; antibiotics piperacillin/tazobactam, ciprofloxacin, azithromycin, metronidazole, and co-amoxiclav; and the anticancer medicines bleomycin, carboplatin, cisplatin, cyclophosphamide, cytarabine, doxorubicin, etoposide, mercaptopurine, methotrexate, and mesna.
